Gmail and Yahoo Mail Settings on Nokia Phones

You can retrieve your Gmail messages with Nokia phone. You can choose either IMAP or POP3 protocol.

IMAP offers several advantages over POP, you can store the email data on Gmail server so you can synchronize with multiple clients, it has better functionality in manipulating inbox, and the ability to manage email folders within single account.

POP is designed to offer simple offline operations, it downloads email to the phone, and generally removing it from the Gmail server, it doesn’t support email folders.

IMAP

Before you can use email on your phone you must enable IMAP in Gmail:

  1. Sign in to Gmail.
  2. Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
  3. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  4. Select Enable IMAP.
  5. Configure your IMAP client and click Save Changes.

Now configure your phone:

  1. Select ‘Messaging’ > ‘Options’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘E-mail’ > ‘Mailboxes’.
    If you have never set up email on your phone before, select ‘Yes’ to define a new mailbox. If you already have other mailboxes, select ‘Options’ and then ‘New mailbox’.
  2. Select ‘Start’ to begin the setup wizard.
  3. Select ‘IMAP4′ and then ‘Next’.
  4. Enter your full email address (including ‘@gmail.com’) as the email address and select ‘Next’. Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format ‘username@your_domain.com’.
  5. Enter ‘imap.gmail.com’ as the incoming mail server and select ‘Next’.
  6. Enter ’smtp.gmail.com’ as the outgoing mail server and select ‘Next’.
  7. Select the appropriate access point and then ‘Next’.
  8. Enter a descriptive name for the email account mailbox name.
  9. Once your mailbox is set up, select it from the email mailbox settings screen.
  10. Select ‘Connection settings’ > ‘Incoming e-mail’.
  11. Enter your address (including ‘@gmail.com’ or ‘@your_domain.com’) and password.
  12. Select ‘SSL/TLS’ for your security (ports) and define your port as ‘993′.
  13. Select ‘Back’.
  14. Select ‘Outgoing e-mail’.
  15. Enter your email address (including ‘@gmail.com’ or ‘@your_domain.com’) and password.
  16. Select ‘StartTLS’ for your security (ports) and define your port as ‘587′.
  17. Select ‘Back’ and change any other settings according to your preferences.

POP

Before you can use email on your phone you must enable POP in Gmail:

  1. Sign in to Gmail.
  2. Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
  3. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  4. Select Enable POP for all mail or Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on.
  5. Choose the action you’d like your Gmail messages to take after they are accessed with POP.
  6. click Save Changes.

Now configure your phone:

  1. Select ‘Messaging’ > ‘Options’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘E-mail’ > ‘Mailboxes’.
    If you have never set up email on your phone before, select ‘Yes’ to define a new mailbox. If you already have other mailboxes, select ‘Options’ and then ‘New mailbox’.
  2. Select ‘Start’ to begin the setup wizard.
  3. Select ‘POP3′ and then ‘Next’.
  4. Enter your full email address (including ‘@gmail.com’) as the email address and select ‘Next’. Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format ‘username@your_domain.com’.
  5. Enter ‘pop.gmail.com’ as the incoming mail server and select ‘Next’.
  6. Enter ’smtp.gmail.com’ as the outgoing mail server and select ‘Next’.
  7. Select the appropriate access point and then ‘Next’.
  8. Enter a descriptive name for the email account mailbox name.
  9. Once your mailbox is set up, select it from the email mailbox settings screen.
  10. Select ‘Connection settings’ > ‘Incoming e-mail’.
  11. Enter your address (including ‘@gmail.com’ or ‘@your_domain.com’) and password.
  12. Select ‘SSL/TLS’ for your security (ports) and define your port as ‘995′.
  13. Select ‘Back’.
  14. Select ‘Outgoing e-mail’.
  15. Enter your email address (including ‘@gmail.com’ or ‘@your_domain.com’) and password.
  16. Select ‘StartTLS’ for your security (ports) and define your port as ‘587′.
  17. Select ‘Back’ and change any other settings according to your preferences.

If you are using POP3, make sure you’ve opted not to leave messages on the server, so you didn’t download the same email each time you connect.

Note: If you’re having trouble sending mail but you’ve confirmed that encyrption is active for SMTP in your mail client, try to configure your SMTP server on a different port: 465 or 587.

Now you’re ready to use your Gmail in your phone.

Yahoo Mail POP Settings

Currently the only known Yahoo mail service offering POP3 access is Y! Singapore, Y! Indonesia, and Y! Hongkong.

Before using POP3 access, you must activate it first.

Using new yahoo interface

  1. Login to yahoo mail
  2. Options > Mail Options
  3. Pop & Forwarding
    At the time this article written, Yahoo still not give access to POP email settings from new interface, so you can click on ‘Set up or edit POP & Forwarding’ link to get classic interface.

Using classic interface

  1. Options > Mail
  2. Pop Access and Forwarding
  3. Choose Web & POP Access
  4. Click Save button

Now configure your phone:

  • Incoming Mail Server (POP3): pop.mail.yahoo.com.sg
  • Use SSL, Port: 995
  • Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.mail.yahoo.com.sg
  • Use SSL, Port: 465
  • Username: (your user name)
  • Email address: (your email address)
  • Password: (your yahoo email password)

Note: If you’re using @rocketmail.com or @ymail.com domain, you must use full email address as username.
